Crowder, Hdez make their points at swimming finals

Richie Crowder and Gabriella Hdez of Los Gatos must really be looking forward to the Central Coast Section (CCS) swimming championships this week.
Why wouldn't they be? After all, they're coming off pretty impressive performances in the championship meet for the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Crowder was the boys individual high point winner and Hdez finished third among the girls to lead the Gatos effort at the league finals.
So the two Wildcats, along with teammate Catherine Eastman, will lead the Los Gatos effort at the CCS trials (May 17, 1 p.m.) and finals (May 18, 1 p.m.) at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
Crowder ran up 40 points to finish first in the boys high point competition. There was a big tie for second, with five swimmers each running up 37 points.
Hdez was third among the girls with 36 points. Homestead's Amber Hovey and Abra Armour tied for first with 40 points apiece. Eastman tied for seventh on the league list with 33 points.
Crowder cruised to a pair of wins to star for Gatos in the league meet. The junior took the 50-yard freestyle in 21.61, and he came back to take the 100 free in 48.04.
Crowder teamed with Austin Nichols, Omied Bagheri and Eric Soung for a sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.31, and the four were also seventh in the 400 free relay in 3:48.47.
Soung added an eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.62 for the Wildcats.
Hdez, a sophomore, breezed to a win in the girls 200 free in 1:55.53, with Eastman sixth in 1:59.40. Hdez came back with a third in the 100 free in 54.83.
Senior Sara Clark ran up 395.50 points to win the 1-meter diving event, with teammate Katie Lampe, a sophomore, second at 377.45.
Eastman, a junior, came through with a win in the 500 free in 5:08.84, with teammate Marian Roan eighth in 5:39.99.
Eastman, Rebecca Stein, Marian Roan and Hdez combined for a fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:53.28.
Los Gatos was sixth in the 200 free relay in 1:48.46. Hdez and Eastman teamed with Rebecca Stein and Laura Davis.
Gatos added a seventh in the 200 medley relay with Davis, Kristen Gonzales, Roan and Megan Odell swimming 2:11.13.
In the girls junior varsity division, Kristen Chang pulled to a second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.54. She had set a new meet record of 1:17.57 with a win in the trials.
Jenny Tighe was sixth in the 50 fly and seventh in the 100 individual medley, and Sylvia Sale was sixth in the 100 back. Chang was eighth in the 50 butterfly.
Los Gatos was fifth in the girls JV 200 medley relay in 2:10.33. Sale, Chang, Tighe and Candi Maldanado made up the team for the Cats. Sale, Chang and Tighe teamed with Amy Niswonger for a fifth in the 400 free relay in 4:17.43.
In boys JV action, Robert Shamshoian was third in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free.
Jake Fisher was sixth in the 50 free, Tyler Scales added a seventh in the 100 breast and Andy Hight finished eighth in the 100 back.
Shamshoian and Fisher teamed with Nolan Verga and Jack Morin for a fourth in the 200 free relay.
Verga, Hight, Scales and Morin finished fifth in the 200 medley relay, and Hight, Shamshoian, Scales and Fisher were sixth in the 400 free relay.
