Los Gatan dies in pileup on Highway 152

Los Gatos resident Harvey Weiner, 70, died from injuries caused by a serious pileup of cars on Highway 152, near Los Baños on May 2. According to CHP Officer Steve Schnuck, heavy smoke from a grass fire in the center median caused the pileup, in which two people died and about a dozen were injured. Seventeen vehicles and three tractor-trailers were involved.

Schnuck said that Weiner and his wife had been driving in the far right lane when their car was struck on the driver's side. Weiner then crawled out of his car, but was struck again by a car traveling in the left lane. He suffered massive injuries and died at a hospital in Modesto.

Ceremony takes place in Old Town for old oak

Old Town will hold a farewell ceremony near Borders Books & Music for one of the town's largest oak trees on May 21, at 10:30 a.m. An arborist has determined that the 70-year-old tree is "rapidly deteriorating" and could fall over at any time. The tree will actually be removed from May 22 to May 23, and will be replaced with another oak.

Dump chemicals properly when cleaning garage

For those residents who plan to clean their garages for the May 19 Community Garage Sale in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno, the West Valley Clean Water Program emphasizes the need to dispose of hazardous wastes properly. Pouring chemicals down sinks or storm drains or throwing them into the garbage endangers wildlife and people. For more information on proper disposal call 408.299.7300.
