Crowder, Eastman are LG winners at CCS finals
By Dick Sparrer
Bobby Crowder had to be hoping for big things when he dove in for his senior season on the Los Gatos swimming season.
And there's nothing bigger for a swimmer in this area than winning a gold medal at the Central Coast Section championships.
As it turns out, though, Crowder didn't have a big season for the Wildcats this spring ... he had a very big season.
Crowder struck gold twice and silver once at the CCS championships held last weekend at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
The talented senior won the 100-meter backstroke in 51:47, and he also helped the Wildcats to a golden performance in the 200 freestyle relay.
Crowder teamed with his brother, sophomore Richie Crowder, and seniors Rich Comeau and Brett Bannon to win the 200 free relay in 1:24.80. B. Crowder swam the anchor leg for the Cats, touching the wall for a Gatos win ahead of second-place Bellarmine.
B. Crowder was also second in the 200 individual medley in 1:52.83.
Richie Crowder also had a big day at CCS, nailing a second in the 200 free in 1:42.56 and a third in the 100 free in 46.71.
Comeau was fourth in the 50 free in 21.36 and he combined with seniors Adam Mayer and Brett Bannon and freshman Brian Williams for a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:25.78.
Rounding out the list of LG boys who placed at the CCS finals was senior diver Nathan Sheffer, who rolled up 433.40 points to finish second overall. The diving event was held earlier in the week at Santa Clara.
Eastman wins
The older of the Crowder brothers wasn't the only Los Gatos winner at CCS, though. Sophomore Catherine Eastman breezed to a win in the 500 free in 4:57.11 for the Gatos girls.
Divers Katie Lampe and Sara Clark each placed the finals held last week at Santa Clara. Lampe, a freshman, finished sixth with 363.80 points and Clark, a junior, was seventh with 363.05 points.
League finals
The Wildcats qualified for the CCS meet with outstanding performances at the league finals held May 4 at Saratoga for teams in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Los Gatos boys, behind the efforts of individual champs B. Crowder, R. Crowder and Sheffer, finished a solid second behind division championship Palo Alto.
The Vikings ran away with the title, rolling up 509 points. Gatos was second at 340 with Los Altos and Gunn sharing third with 327.5 points apiece.
