    D'backs win, Mets lose to tighten the Pony race

    By Dick Sparrer

    The race tightened last week in the Los Gatos Pony League, thanks to a couple of lopsided decisions.

    The Mariners knocked the league-leading Mets down a peg with a 16-5 win last Monday, and the second-place Diamondbacks took advantage of the opportunity with a 10-0 win over the A's to pull within a game of first place in the standings.

    Kyle Jensen tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Diamondbacks past the A's. Jensen was touched for a first-inning single by Brian Dressman, but that would be the only hit he would allow in the Thursday evening game.

    A two-run double by Chris Cuthbert and run-scoring singles by Jeremy Bays and Ben Walker sparked the D'backs to the win.

    Earlier in the week, Mark Ericson and Jason Livingstone teamed to toss a seven-hitter to lead the Mariners past the Mets 16-5.

    Nat Henry homered, doubled and singled twice to lead the offensive attack in the win. Jeff Collins singled and doubled twice, and Travis Livingstone had three hits. J. Livingstone ripped two doubles and Ericson singled and doubled.

    Andrew Ford singled and doubled for the Mets and Wes Piper had two hits.

    The Mets were coming off of a 13-1 win over the Giants. Jadd Correia doubled and singled twice and Piper and Jordan Senner had two hits apiece in the Mets victory.

    Danny Politi, Nick Gaffney and Brett Davis each doubled and Brad Davis, Andrew Silva and Andrew Ford added singles.

    Logan Shafer ripped two hits and Jeff Blue, Devin Scott, David Holtzman and Nick Perrone added singles.

    In other Pony action last week, Patrick McDonald went the distance to flip a four-hitter to lead the Diamondbacks to a 3-1 win over Mariners.

    McDonald doubled and Nick Gionfriddo, Cuthbert and Michael Robards each singled in the win for the Diamondbacks.

    Ericson and Henry each doubled and Eric Rollins and J. Livingstone added singles for the Mariners.

    Correia doubled twice and singled twice and Ford had three hits to lift the Mets to a 9-2 win over the Mariners. Bre. Davis tripled and singled and Piper singled and doubled in the win. Brian Wendt and Senner added two hits apiece.

    J.P. Grist gave up just four hits and struck out eight in five innings to lead the Yankees to an 18-3 win over the Giants.

    Mark Helleboid led the offensive attack with four hits. Eric Brown doubled twice and Grist tripled and singled.

    Matt Hirakawa had two hits, and Liam Smith, Eric Preseran, Kevin McCarty, Charlie Self and Jesse Barron added singles for the Yanks.

    Kenny Rodrigues had two hits for the Giants and Holtzman ripped a two-run single. Nick Guedenet also had a hit.

    In other recent games:

    * Bays doubled twice and singled to lead the Diamondbacks past the Mariners 7-4;

    * Dressman and Russell Laubach teamed up to toss the A's to a 5-4 win over the Yankees;

    * Holtzman belted a two-run homer and scattered seven hits (one a two-run homer by Bre. Davis) to lead the Giants to an 8-2 win over the Mets;

    * Mike Cartmell doubled twice, Rishi Satia had three hits and Dressman singled and doubled in the A's 19-9 win over the Giants;

    * Ericson fired a four-hitter and singled and doubled to spark the Mariners to a 14-2 win over the Yankees;

    * Holtzman struck out 18 in seven innings as he whirled a four-hitter for the Giants in a 7-3 win over the A's;

    * Ericson and Rollins combined to toss a three-hitter for a win when Steven Whitham ripped a two-run single in the seventh to give the Mariners a 2-1 win over the Yankees;

    * Correia ripped a two-run homer to drive the Mets to a 9-1 win over the Diamondbacks;

    * Correia homered, but two doubles by Satia and a three-run double by Cartmell led the A's to an 11-8 win over the Mets;

    * Bays belted a two-run homer and Jensen doubled twice and singled to pace the Diamondbacks to a 7-5 win over the Yankees;

    * Bays pounded a three-run homer to drive the D'backs to a 19-8 win over the Yankees;

    * Politi and Wendt had two hits apiece for the Mets in a 9-8 win over the A's.

    Los Gatos Pony League standings (as of May 12): Mets 9-4, Diamondbacks 8-5, Giants 7-6, Mariners 7-6, A's 6-7, Yankees 2-10.
