Wildcats win track championships

    Sports Orientation

    All eighth-graders entering Los Gatos High School in the fall of 2000 are invited to a sports orientation night on May 23, 7 p.m., in the large LGHS gym. Call 408.354.2730 for info.

    Wedemeyer Scholarships

    The second annual Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Awards Dinner will be held on May 17, 6 p.m., at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and six deserving athletes will receive $5,000 scholarships. All winning athletes have overcome some sort of adversity, and all have given to their communities.

    Local sports celebrities expected for the ceremony include Ronnie Lott, Brent Jones, Peggy Fleming and Chuck Muncie. All money raised from the dinner will fund Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach, which supports individuals and families coping with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

    Youth Football

    Signups for the 2000 Los Gatos Pop Warner football season are now being accepted. The organization will hold a special registration session on May 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Mountain Mikes in Los Gatos for players and cheerleaders interested in playing for the Wildcats (ages 11-15) and Bearcats (ages 7-9).

    Pop Warner offers programs for children ages 7-15 from Los Gatos and Saratoga. Football teams are grouped according to weight and age, and cheer squads are grouped by age.

    The organization will add a new instructional, non-competitive entry-level division this season for boys ages 7-9 weighing between 45 and 85 pounds.
