    Cartoons reflect freedom of speech

The letter from George Lenehan in the April 29 issue expressing great displeasure of Stephen DeCinzo's "campaign of personal attacks" on Police Chief Larry Todd left me no recourse but to respond.

In my view, Mr. DeCinzo executes satirical political humor in his cartoons and when this is done well, it will draw ire.

Being the butt of his cartoons, or even letters to the editor, is part and parcel of public life and politics.

One doesn't rise to the prestigious position of chief of police without experiencing criticism.

You ask what the newspaper's responsibility is--I think it's probably "freedom of speech," Mr. Lenehan. You think Mr. DeCinzo should be censored so as not to offend some of us. I think not! What provokes you may not necessarily even faze many others.

This newspaper's editor cannot take it upon herself to make that distinction and deprive some of us the sheer enjoyment of Mr. DeCinzo's cartoons!

    Cartoon was in poor taste

As I was a subject of a recent cartoon, some people may erroneously assume I agree with it. Actually, I have several objections to the cartoon that showed me knocking out Los Gatos High School Principal Trudy McCulloch.

First, the "win-lose" scenario is inaccurate--not merely because there is no "victory" which has spelled anyone's demise, but also--and more importantly--because several of us are seeking a "win-win" resolution of this year's challenges.

Second, I strongly object to the portrayal of my principal in such a humiliating manner. As an educational leader and public figure, she deserves respectful treatment rather than abject mockery.

Finally, in a small community like Los Gatos, where rumors and inaccuracies complicate the issues under discussion, pointedly personal cartoons can adversely affect people in unwarranted ways. I hope that in the future the cartoonist, in pursuit of humor, seeks a greater balance with universal and humane ethical obligations and basic social responsibilities.

Website helped newcomers feel at home early

I wanted to thank the entire staff at the Los Gatos Weekly-Times for their efforts in developing the newspaper's website that corresponds to the newspaper.

My girlfriend and I take possession of our apartment in Los Gatos this upcoming weekend. We already love the area, but the Weekly-Times has given us an even better understanding of the community and the people within. Though we are both part of Generation X and have no trouble meeting people, it was nice to find some clear avenues for success.

We look forward to meeting the community residents in the near future. We hope to be part of the community in terms of friendships, volunteerism, church, athletics and, potentially,. politics. We hope to make this our home.
