Cats face unbeaten Bells in playoffs

    By Dick Sparrer

Bellarmine won the Central Coast Section boys volleyball championship a year ago. Los Gatos wants to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The Wildcats will collide with the Bells in the CCS semifinals this week, and the Cats have their sights set on a berth in the section championship match set for May 20, 7 p.m., at Santa Clara High School.

Gatos, 24-5 for the year, pounded Harbor 15-5, 15-10, 15-9 in the first round of CCS, then handled Soquel 15-5, 17-15, 8-15, 15-11 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semi's this week.

The Wildcats and Bells will meet on May 18, 8 p.m., at Santa Clara in the second of the two semifinal matches. Homestead (30-4) will face Monterey (40-1) at 6 p.m. on the same floor.

Bellarmine crushed Leland 15-3, 15-13, 15-13 in the quarters to improve to 25-0 for the year.

Los Gatos is making its third straight trip to the CCS volleyball playoffs, and the Cats need a win over Bellarmine Tuesday to advance to the finals for the third straight year. Gatos won the CCS title in 1997 and finished second in 1998.
