Los Gatos Weekly-TimesObituariesMary Horan Los Gatos resident Mary Fraites Horan died April 26 at the age of 90. Born July 24, 1906, in Boston, Mass., Horan was brought to California at the age of 4 months and spent her early childhood in Hanford, Corcoran and Coalinga. Following her education at the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles Public Library's Library School, she began what would become a decade of work as a children's librarian. During this period she also married Harold Baxter Horan, whom she later divorced. In 1944, Horan was transferred to the philosophy, religion and psychology department of the Los Angeles Library Service's central library, where she served as department librarian for 16 years. She took an early retirement in 1960, moved to Carmel, learned to drive and served as librarian for the Monterey County Bookmobile for another eight years. In 1980, Horan retired again and moved to a Los Gatos apartment. She settled in the Los Gatos Meadows two years later. She enjoyed traveling and writing, especially poetry. Horan is survived by nephews Rick Fraites of Novato and Gordon Hoskins of Southern California. Memorial services have been held. Robert Mathewson Los Gatos resident Robert Malcolm Mathewson died April 9 of pneumonia at the age of 86. Born Aug. 20, 1910, in Oakdale, Penn., Mathewson ran his own heating and air conditioning business. He later worked many years for Pan Am Airlines, handling facilities maintenance in Trinidad, Brazil and other countries around the world prior to his retirement in 1975. That same year, Mathewson settled in Los Gatos. Survivors include wife Virginia of Dunedin, Fla.; sons John of Los Gatos and Moss Beach, Thomas of Des Moines, Iowa, and Christopher of Pasadena, Md.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A celebration of Mathewson's life was held at the home of John Mathewson and wife Bobbi Mendenhall in Moss Beach.
