Both qualified for the Western States Regional Meet, which was held April 12 in Santa Barbara. Lyndsay placed first on floor exercises and fourth on uneven parallel bars. Sara placed second on bars and third on vault. Both girls are also Fisher honor roll students. LGHS senior earns achievement award Los Gatos High School senior Ryan Johnson placed second in the science and mathematics category in Bank of America's 1997 Achievement Awards regional final event, held April 23 in San Jose. Students throughout Santa Clara, Monterey and San Benito counties competed by writing essays on topics related to their academic field (applied arts, fine arts, liberal arts or science and mathematics), and then presenting their work to a judging panel and responding to questions and comments by the panel. As one of four second-place winners, Johnson received $1,500. Four first-place winners won $2,000 each, with $1,000 going to third-place winners and $500 to fourth-place winners. All winners also receive plaques from Bank of America in honor of their achievement. Schools and business team up for fundraiser McWhorter's stationers is gearing up for its seventh annual Back-to-School Fundraiser and is encouraging all Bay Area schools to participate by signing up now to obtain special vouchers. Between July 21 and Sept. 30, individuals holding vouchers bearing their favorite school's name can present the vouchers when making purchases at any McWhorter's; the store then donates 10 percent of the bill to that school. The company has donated more than $450,000 to schools in the past six years. Los Gatos High School and Fisher Middle School were both among the top five fundraising schools last year.
