The Prowler

As a feline who is naturally handy with pen and paper, the Prowler loves anything having to do with reading and writing, which makes for a never-ending supply of amusement.

Words of wit can even be found while prowling around the streets of Los Gatos. Although this cat usually gets a chuckle from funny license plates, the latest feline perambulations turned up a few choice bumper stickers.

Anyone who's been stuck behind an erratic or inattentive driver engaged in a cellular phone conversation would no doubt appreciate "Hang Up and Drive!" And for the driver who gets really aggravated, there's this crude but practical reminder: "Horn Broken; Watch for Finger."

The presidential race may be over for another few years, but the farcical slogans remain, such as "Don't Blame Me; I Voted for Jack!" (for Jack in the Box fans); "Picard/Riker '96" (for Star Trek: Next Generation fans) and "Dole for Pineapple" (no explanation necessary!).

Speaking of words and witticisms, the Prowler heard that Scrabble aficionados from throughout California and out-of-state are convening over Memorial Day weekend for the "Cat Fight," a three-day tournament held at the Los Gatos Lodge for Scrabble fans ranging from kitchen-table novices to well-read experts. Did you know zyzzyva is the name of a rare tropical weevil? Scrabble players do! To get in on the action, call Rich Moyer at 395-4006 for info.

No matter how great words are, a picture is still worth a thousand of them.

At Los Osos Cafe, located at 19 N. Santa Cruz Ave., is a series of prints chronicling photographer Nicole Coleman's trip off the beaten path in Oaxaca, Mexico.
