Los Gatos High School's Jazz Purr warms up for 'On Broadway XI.'

LGHS choral groups to appear 'On Broadway'

    By Leigh Ann Maze

Upholding a longstanding tradition, Los Gatos High School will present its 18th annual Pops Concert in June. This year the performance is titled, "On Broadway XI" and features the LGHS Choir, the Jazz Purr singing group and the Fisher Middle School Chorus. About 100 students will perform numbers from Broadway musicals done in the same style as on the Broadway stage.

Jazz Purr's members have firsthand experience with the Broadway stage after a February trip to New York during which they saw six Broadway plays and an opera. Jazz Purr, in fact, will open On Broadway XI with the song "New York, New York."

The opening act also includes Steppin' Out, a medley of swing tunes. Segments of the show will highlight the music of legendary American composers Duke Ellington, who died in 1974, and Stephen Sondheim, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year. Tunes from the Broadway musical Footloose are included in the program.

Show times are June 1 and 2, at 8 p.m. in LGHS's Prentiss Brown auditorium. Tickets are now on sale and cost $10 for reserved seating and $8 for general admission. Tickets may be purchased in advance with a $2 discount at the LGHS main office before May 26. Tickets will also be available at the box office one hour before showtime. All proceeds benefit the LGHS music program. For more information, call 408.354.2730, ext. 240.
