The Prowler
Although summertime is just around the corner, that doesn't mean kids' learning opportunities have to cease. On the contrary, those opportunities can be even more fun during this less structured season!
The Prowler has noticed that the nonprofit Youth Science Institute is consistently one of the best bets for parents who want to disguise education behind the façade of fun. The YSI's Nature Center in Los Gatos' Vasona Lake County Park is taking sign-ups right now for its Summer Science Day Camps. A few classes were already filled as of last week, but most are still available.
All programs are age-specific: Group A consists of 3- to-4-year-olds; Group B is for kids entering kindergarten and 1st grade; Group C is for incoming 2nd through 4th grade; and Group D is for 4th- through 6th-graders.
Some of the programs whose titles tickled this curious cat's fancy include Wild Images, Bike Hike, Nature's Drama, Living on Light, Mighty Forest, Wet & Wild, Habitat Hunt and Tiny Beasts. For details on class times, dates and fees, call those Nature- and animal-loving YSI folks at 408.356.4945.
The Prowler's friends at The Wild Bird Center, in the Kings Court Center at 792 Blossom Hill Road, are also gearing up for their Summer Series 2000--a fun bunch of activities for children of all ages. The first class, Trackers, takes place June 20 and 23. Kids will learn how to make plaster casts of animal tracks and then go on a hike at Belgatos Park to investigate for pawprints or other signs of animal visitors. This cat will periodically remind readers of upcoming classes. In the meantime, call 408.358.9453 for more info.
