Los Gatos Pony League standings

Perrone homers twice, and one is a grand slam

    By Dick Sparrer

Matt Perrone may not be the biggest player in the Los Gatos Little League.

But Perrone mustered up all the power in his 80-pound frame to slug a pair of home runs last Saturday to lead the Indians to a 14-8 major division victory over the Cubs.

Perrone ripped a two-run homer in the third and came back with a grand slam in the fourth to knock in six runs in the Indians' victory.

Perrone finished the day with three hits, and teammate Spencer Doyle was three-for-three with a double. Nat Henry and Liam Smith each singled and doubled.

Gus Winkleman singled and doubled twice for the Cubs, and Marty Mullins had two hits.

It was the second win of the week for the Indians over the Cubs. The Tribe had blanked the Cubbies 4-0 earlier in the week on a four-hit shutout by Smith. The hurler fanned three and walked just two in the win.

Singles by Smith, Spencer Doyle and Noah Henry sparked a three-run rally for the Indians in the fourth, and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Spencer Maltbie singled and doubled for the Cubs, and Kenny Rodrigues tossed three shutout innings to open the game.

The first-place Yankees were also double winners last week, two-timing the Rangers 10-0 and 4-0.

Derek Thomas, Kyle Jensen and Bret Hampton teamed to toss a three-hit shutout in the 10-0 win to open the week. Thomas gave up a lead-off single, but that runner was gunned down attempting to steal. Thomas then went on to retire eight straight in the three frames, fanning five.

Jensen struck out six in two innings, and Hampton fanned one in the sixth.

Nathan Swartley blasted a two-run homer and also singled for the Yanks. Emerson DiNapoli doubled and singled twice, Jensen had three hits and Hampton two.

Tommy Towson doubled and singled twice for the Rangers.

Thomas and Jensen combined for a three-hit shutout in the Yankees' 4-0 win over the Rangers on Saturday. Thomas struck out five over the first three innings and Jensen whiffed four over the final three.

Thomas led the Yanks with three hits and Hampton and Travis Livingstone had two apiece.

Ben Walker had two hits for the Rangers, and Navneet Hakhu tossed two scoreless innings of relief, fanning five.

The second-place Pirates kept pace with the Yankees, claiming two wins over the Padres.

Logan Schafer went three straight innings to get the 16-8 pitching win over the Pads on Saturday. Nick Gaffney was four-for-four and scored three runs for the Bucs, and Dylan Burke doubled.

Chris Cuthbert tripled for the Pads, and Ryan Honda came through with a clutch, bases-loaded single that cleared the bags when the ball got through the center fielder.

Charlie Self blasted a two-run homer in the second and also tossed three strong innings to get the win in the Pirates' 8-2 victory over the Padres on Thursday. Self struck out seven in his three-inning stint, and finished with a pair of hits.

Justin Schafer had two hits in the win, and L. Schafer ripped a double for the Pirates.

Ryan Bersano tripled, and David Pavicich doubled for the Padres. Sammy Dickinson pitched three innings of tough relief.

The Giants joined the Yanks, Pirates and Indians as double-winners last week. The Giants beat the Marlins 9-6 on Saturday after nailing a tight 3-2 win earlier in the week.

Mitchell Knauf walked and eventually scored on an error to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth to give the Giants the 3-2 win over the Marlins on Tuesday evening.

Erik Rollin and Jeremy Bays combined to flip a two-hitter for the victory. Rollin struck out six, and Bays fanned seven. Rollin doubled and scored a run in the fourth, and Jake Schonig tripled and scored a run in the fifth. Bays also doubled for the Giants.

Mike Brienzo was tagged with the tough pitching loss, despite going the distance for the Marlins.

The Giants won another thriller later in the week, scoring three runs in the eighth to claim a 9-6 extra-inning win over the Marlins.

Ryan Black was hit by a pitch to open the eighth and Kyle Bakken walked. An out later, Kevin McCarty singled home a run, and Bays followed with a two-run double.

Bays had four hits in the win, including a pair of doubles, and McCarty doubled and singled twice.

Chad Corl doubled and singled twice, and Brienzo had two hits.

The Cardinals turned back the Giants 11-9 on Sunday, but fell to the A's 9-2 on Friday night.

Danny Sullivan tossed a complete game, and Scott Brown homered and tripled to lead the A's to the 9-2 win over the Cards. Sullivan whirled a three-hitter and struck out 12.

Brown blasted a run-scoring triple in a six-run first for the A's and added a homer in the sixth. Kyle Blair had two hits, Paul Elias doubled, and Kyle Dietrich ripped a bases-loaded single in the big rally in the first.

Forrest Gallien was four-for-four with three doubles, Jack Wall doubled and homer-ed, and Woody Wilkerson doubled twice to lead the Cards past the Giants 11-9. Wall's homer was a three-run shot in the fourth.

Marc Guedenet doubled and singled in the win, and Jeff Trobbe had two hits.

Trevor Campbell doubled twice and singled and McCarty had three hits for the Giants. Rollin, and Alex Zanotto doubled.

Los Gatos Little League major division standings (as of May 22): Yankees 15-1, Pirates 13-3, A's 12-3, Giants 9-7, Cubs 7-9, Rangers 7-9, Cardinals 6-9, Indians 5-11, Marlins 5-11, Padres 0-16.
