Dressman hits, pitches Yankees to Pony wins

    By Dick Sparrer

Dan Dressman had a pretty good day for the Yankees in the Los Gatos Pony League.

Check that... make it a pretty good week.

Dressman was four-for-four and was the winning pitcher for the Yanks in a 9-3 win over the Phillies, and he came back as the closer and scored the winning run for the Yankees in a tight 2-1 win over the Giants later in the week.

Dressman relieved starter David Holtzman in the fifth in the clash with the Giants. Holtzman tossed four strong innings, allowing just a run on four hits while fanning seven. But he left with the game tied 1-1.

Dressman allowed just two hits while flipping three scoreless innings to get the win. He struck out eight.

Dressman helped clinch the win for the Yanks when he beat out an infield single to open the sixth. He moved to second and third on passed balls before Holtzman was walked intentionally. After Holtzman swiped second, Jess Barron walked to load the bases. Dressman then scored on a passed ball.

The Giants threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Brett Cavanagh ripped a one-out double and took third on a wild pitch. But Cavanagh was caught trying to steal home, and the Yankees had clinched the thrilling win.

Holtzman and Matt Martini each singled for the Yanks. Holtzman singled in the first, was gunned down attempting to steal by Cavanagh.

Holtzman walked to open the fourth and raced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. He scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.

The Giants had taken the early lead with a run in the second. Travis Howell singled to right and took second on an error. Drew Bothman walked, but Howell was forced at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Greg Bridges. Matt Rose singled, though, and Bothman scored.

Rose later clubbed a double, and Jason Livingstone and Kyle Schafer each singled.

Howell was tagged with the tough loss despite going the distance to toss a three-hitter. He struck out nine.

The Yanks were coming off of a 9-3 win over the Phillies. Dressman struck out 11 and gave up just five hits in five innings of work.

Dressman led the offensive attack with four hits, and Holtzman, Nick Tom, Andrew O'Gorman and Eric Rude each singled.

Andy Betzina and Scott Shand each doubled for the Phils, and Bryan Schiefelbein had two hits. David Towson, Patrick McDonald and Russell Laubach added hits.

McDonald made a sensational catch in center field in the sixth.

Casey Furtado blasted a double and triple, and Danny Politi had three hits to lead the Marlins to a 10-6 win over the Giants.

Rishi Satia, Devin Scott, Darien Hirotsu and Clint Lid each singled in the win, and James Gentry lifted a sacrifice fly.

Cavanagh ripped a two-run single, and Rose, Livingstone, Howell and Nick Perrone each singled for the Giants. Howell, the Giants' catcher, gunned down a pair of Marlins attempting to steal.

The Marlins came back with a tight 4-2 win over the Devil Rays.

Hirotsu and Will Biderman each doubled home a run, Gentry had a run-scoring single, and Furtado and Nick Guedenet added singles.

Ryan Daily doubled home a run for the Rays, and Adam Crane and Patrick Murphy each singled.

Alex Rollin tossed a three-hitter to lead the Braves to a 6-2 win over the Devil Rays. Rollin struck out 15, and he helped his cause at the plate with a run-scoring double in the third and a two-run single in the fifth.

Chris Anderson doubled and Carter Wallace, B.J. Lawler and Michael Robards each singled. Robards belted a sacrifice fly to drive in a run and Jarret Kasper dropped a key sacrifice bunt. Sean Fetke came through with a clutch defensive play in left.

Crane, Nick Gionfriddo and Ryan Presley each doubled for the Rays. Luke Hornal made an outstanding catch in center field, and Jeff Oleson made a nice defensive play at catcher.

The Braves romped past the Phillies 11-1 in their second game of the week. Wallace doubled and tripled in the win, and S. Fetke doubled. Robards and Alex Kehriotis added singles.

Schiefelbein had three hits, and Shand and McDonald each singled for the Phils.

Rollin and Wes Piper combined to toss a five-hitter for the win.

Los Gatos Pony League standings (as of May 13): Yankees 11-2, Giants 9-4, Braves 7-6, Devil Rays 6-7, Marlins 4-9, Phillies 2-11
