The Prowler
Despite possessing attributes of the feline persuasion, the Prowler has become a computer-savvy cat nonetheless, as this column obviously proves. The Prowler knows, however, there are still some individuals for whom the Internet and World Wide Web feel like a Pandora's Box filled with unknown evils and confusion.
Bringing hope (which, incidentally, was the only thing left after Pandora unwisely opened her infamous package) is the Los Gatos Library, which offers a free series of beginning Internet classes for teenagers and adults on the first Thursday of each month from June through August.
Held from 9 to 11 a.m., the classes are designed for people who are already somewhat comfortable with computers, but who are new to the Internet. To register, call 354-6896. Class helpers are more than welcome--anyone familiar with Windows 95, Netscape Navigator and cyber-surfing can call Susan Buxton at 399-5723. Buxton is also the contact for those interested in driving for the library's outreach program, which supplies homebound Los Gatans with monthly deliveries of books, videos or books on tape.
Speaking of volunteerism, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District seeks a few good nature-lovers to staff the David Daniels Nature Center at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve on weekends and holidays. Volunteers answer visitors' questions and help them explore the center's hands-on exhibits. Periodically, other nature centers or open space preserves within the district-- which comprises more than 44,000 acres from San Carlos to Los Gatos--need volunteer help in various ways. For more information, call (650) 691-1200.
