Lexington Reservoir hosts sailing, boating activities

Programs set for holidays, weekends

After more than 400 water enthusiasts participated during its debut season last year, the Lexington Sailing and Boating Program is now up and running for its second season of programs open to the public. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

The program, which is authorized by the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department, provides visitors with lessons and rentals of sailboats, pedalboats, kayaks, windsurfing boards and Hobie Cats.

There are also one-week summer sessions--scheduled from June through August--in boating and sailing available to youths between the ages of 12 and 15. The emphasis of the classes is on safety, skills, fun and teamwork. Staff members are college physical education teachers and are certified lifeguards with CPR and first aid training. The director, Capt. Charles Dougherty, is licensed by the United States Coast Guard.

Future plans for the program include the festivity boat, which can be reserved for birthday parties, weddings and other special occasions. Additional features are a barbecue area, music facilities and a waterslide.

High school and junior-level sailing team programs are also being organized. The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association is helping DeAnza College in forming community, high school and junior-level teams, which will practice on Lexington Reservoir, host sailing regattas and travel to interleague competitions.

For more information about these programs, call Dougherty at 972-1188 or 864-8645.
