Farewell reception planned for the Rev. David Wolf

AFTER 13 years as pastor of Los Gatos United Methodist Church, the Rev. David Wolf is leaving in June to head up the church's Volunteers in Mission (VIM) in Sacramento. Wolf, 65, will be succeeded by Madi (Madeleine) Elsea, who has been pastor at Centennial United Methodist in Sacramento.

"I've had a wonderful experience in Los Gatos," Wolf said. "The people have been wonderful, both in their sense of mission and on a personal level." Volunteers from the Los Gatos church have done humanitarian work, recently helping rebuild a black church in Georgia that had been lost in an arson fire.

Wolf came to Los Gatos in 1984 and was co-minister with the Rev. Ron Dunn. They followed the Rev. Ralph York. Wolf and his wife, Ruth, have two sons and two grandchildren. A farewell reception is planned June 14 at the church, 19 High School Court.

Town Councilmember Jan Hutchins won the "closest to the hole" prize at the 13th. Los Gatos businesses donated $2,500 worth of merchandise for raffle baskets. THE West Valley High-12 Masonic Club and Los Gatos Lions Club, both supporters of Boy Scout Troop 539, will hold fundraising barbecues in Vasona Park Pavilion in June. The Masonic Club plans its picnic June 23, and the Lions will be at the park June 25. The barbecues will raise money to help send scouts to summer camp. The troop has a cabin at Swanton, near Davenport, which they use every month except December. An annual one-week trip takes them to the Santa Clara Valley Boy Scout camp, located off Highway 108 east of Sonora, along the McClavey River. The annual campout enables scouts to work toward the Eagle designation, the highest in scouting. Troop 539 began in 1922 as Troop 3 and was later renamed Troop 39. Troop 539 members sell Christmas wreaths each year to help defray the $725 cost of sending each boy to the annual encampment. Parents pay the cost when they can.

BOY Scout Troop 501, oldest troop in the county, is looking for pictures of former scoutmasters. Call Don Arnaudo, 354-4017.

It will depict fruit-growing and other aspects of our past. Photographs of the canneries in and near Los Gatos will be on display.
