Community recognizes Seniors of Distinction

Knowlton K. Shore, a longtime youth volunteer in Los Gatos, was named Senior of Distinction during a reception last Friday at The Terraces.

The award, presented by The Terraces and the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, recognizes the contributions of the older citizens of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno to the community.

Shore has been scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 539 since 1965. He has long worked on state trails, particularly those at Castle Rock and Big Basin state parks, and has encouraged and organized Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire youth in these projects.

He has been active with the Los Gatos Masonic Lodge 272 since 1959. During the 1960s, he was a Demolay activities adviser and a Job's Daughters associate guardian in the 1980s.

He has spent many hours as a volunteer with the Billy Jones Railroad and was instrumental in the formation of the Los Gatos Youth Park, where he spends every weekend assisting youth organizations with outdoor activities and learning experiences.

Shore maintains and repairs the Youth Park building and grounds on a volunteer basis and often spends his own funds to see that safe conditions exist for the 2,000 children who use the facility each year.

Certificates of merit were presented to six runners-up in the annual Seniors of Distinction awards. They went to Joe Cusick, an active volunteer with the Los Gatos Museum Association, St. Mary's Parish, the Los Gatos Department of Parks, Forestry and Maintenance and The Terraces advisory board; Rusty Fullmer, a Terraces resident who has been active on a number of committees, along with church activities and with Villa Montalvo; the Rev. Hans Frick, who works with immigrants and is involved with other volunteer work through Catholic Charities; Fran Alfson, a retired teacher, who is president of the Los Gatos History Club and donates many volunteer hours to Eastfield Ming Quong's Village House; Beverly Rouse, a former Fisher Middle School teacher who was a founder of Eastfield Ming Quong's Village House; and Mary Foster, history curator of Forbes Mill History Museum, who taped 100 shows on the community's old-timers for KCAT and is well-known in town as Mother Goose at the annual Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade.

The Seniors of Distinction award was first presented by The Terraces two years ago to residents for contributions to the quality of life at the retirement community.

This year, the event was expanded to include any resident of Los Gatos or Monte Sereno, age 65 or older, and the Weekly-Times became the co-sponsor. Nominations were submitted by people in the community.

Judges were Pamela Bancroft, community relations manager at The Terraces, Los Gatos Mayor Joanne Benjamin, longtime Los Gatan William Cilker, Los Gatos High School principal Ted Simonson and Weekly-Times editor Dale Bryant.
