Former YSI students gather for special reunion
By Mary Ann Cook
YSI REUNION: These people hadn't seen each other for 30 years and now are scattered all over the United States and beyond. But they reconvened one recent weekend at the Redwood Estates home of Larry Moitozo and J.J. Martin.
The 30 who reunited are former Youth Science Institute (YSI) members. And Moitozo was the founding director of YSI in 1953.
Jim Williams, a professional mountain climber who grew up in Saratoga, and Doug Col, a psychologist now living in Oregon, were the organizers of the reunion. Col put together a slide show from photos that were sent him from those contacted.
The YSI alum who came the farthest was a flight attendant stationed in Paris. Barbara and John Baggerly's niece, Annie Gibson, was also one of the attendees. It's amazing how many of Moitozo's former students work in the environmental sciences, Martin commented--forestry service, teachers, mountain guides.
Moitozo taught ecology of the High Sierras and cross country skiing at UC-Santa Cruz. He was presented with a scrapbook of his YSI years, thanks to the gleanings of the organizers. One attendee, John Urrutia, had recently moved his 90-year-old mother to Our Lady of Fatima. When she protested the move, her son said, "Remember, I didn't want to go to YSI camp either, but I went. And I'm glad I did." He's in the forestry service.
BROWN (MURPHY) INTERVIEWS GREENE (CAROL): Reginald Rabbit and Carol Greene, both Los Gatans, were interviewed by Candice Bergen in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. Four ventriloquists were chosen to be interviewed for the Today Show.
Greene doesn't know the airing date, but it could be any day now. NBC.com posts listings for the Today Show.
Greene is a ventriloquist who lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains, worked her way through college performing, and now presents shows with her blockheaded confreres at churches, clubs and schools. She writes her own material, as well as supplying the voices for her family of vents.
Her husband, Paul, is a long-distance cyclist who is biking across the United States as you read this. Carol is driving the support vehicle, a minivan. You can catch the status of their odyssey on the website http://www.paulgreene.net, including digital photos of their trip.
Carol was at the Vegas Ventriloquist Festival when Valentine Vox, the organizer of the event, asked her to be one of those interviewed. Earlier he had seen Reginald Rabbit tossing dice and having a great time gambling. All in all, Reggie was in rabbit heaven--he even kissed Ms. Bergen, with her permission.
Carol's appraisal of the famed interviewer: "Candice was interested in how we used vents and what it is like today. I think it has changed a lot from when her dad, Edgar Bergen, was doing it. Candice is lovely ... very quiet and charming ... genuinely nice and sincere."
HERITAGE AWARD: Adriana Anavitarte was one of six winners of the Regional Hispanic Heritage Youth Award. Anavitarte, a student at Los Gatos High, won a $2,000 education grant, and a $1,000 grant was made in her name to the nonprofit of her choice.
She is now eligible to compete for the national educational grant of $5,000.
Anavitarte was sponsored by Microsoft, and she won in the science and technology category. The awards were created five years ago to promote Hispanic excellence and provide Hispanic role models. Students were chosen based on academic achievements and community involvement and an essay about the importance of their Hispanic heritage.
