The Prowler

While still just a kitten, the Prowler learned early the value of reading. When inclement weather or an overly watchful mother cat prevented outdoor forays, the Prowler still "escaped"--into the pages of books.

To encourage a similar appreciation of books and their contents, the Los Gatos Public Library, located at 110 E. Main St., has several fun activities and programs planned for children and adults this summer.

On June 15, the library holds a family night for 3- to 6-year-olds and their parents. Beginning at 7 p.m. in the children's room, this is the kickoff event for the Summer Reading Club. Mara the storyteller, whose motto is "Try new things," is part of the fun. On June 18 at 3:15 p.m. is a sign-up party for older kids who want to join the club. Refreshments will be served.

The purpose of the Summer Reading Club--whose dinosaur-related theme this year is "Readasaurus"--is to encourage reading in an enjoyable way. Children receive a log in which to keep track of every book they read or have read to them. Prize packets come along at the completion of 10 books.

The way adults fit into the picture is through the new Grandparents and Books program. In libraries throughout California, thanks to the Library Services and Construction Act, older adult volunteers from the community have been trained to read stories to and interact with young audiences. These eager readers wear special buttons for easy identification.

For grandparents' schedules, or for more info on any of the other programs, call the children's librarian at 354-6893.
