Some of the points she made: With modern equipment there's nothing on a boat that women can't handle. Older couples are getting into sailing, with the wife learning all the skills needed in case of emergency. Women are often a calming influence when things go wrong at sea; what guy is going to "lose it" in a woman's presence? The LGYC meets the second Tuesday each month at the Los Gatos Lodge and welcomes visitors. ANNUAL membership meeting of the Los Gatos Museum Association is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at the Forbes Mill History Museum. A potluck luncheon is planned. IT'S cheering news that, with more money in town coffers, there are plans for street repairs. Some of those potholes can really shake up passengers. Also, it's nice to know the library is open now on Fridays. SIX students from teacher Tonya Silva's English class at Los Gatos High School had some practice in journalism as they interviewed residents of The Meadows who have had interesting experiences.
THE Los Gatos Museum of Art Gallery is displaying a retrospective of works by the late Tony Cristallo, including paintings, photography and sculpture, until June 29, For many years, Cristallo had a gallery in Old Town. The museum at The EXECUTIVE director of the Youth Science Institute, Ann Dunham, described the YSI program at a meeting of Los Gatos Kiwanis Club. Besides the facility at Vasona Park, begun in 1980, YSI is at Alum Rock Park in San Jose and Sanborn Park in Saratoga. YSI provides nature walks , science safaris for families, bat hikes conducted at night, and classes for children from preschool to fifth grade. "WE had not a single bad day, not a single bad meal," said Kiwanian Don Wolf, telling the club of a trip to Russia and Scotland. May all your summer trips go as well. THE Strawberry Festival June 7 and 8 is at West Valley College, but that's within easy driving distance for Los Gatans. SUMMER is almost upon us and the Loma Prieta Community Center, 23800 Summit Rd., is welcoming it Saturday, June 7, with a Community Summer Celebration. You can dance the night away or just relax with friends. Reservations at $15 per person or $25 for two will support the Loma Prieta Home and School Club. For information and reservations, call Laura Santana, 353-4129. SEVERAL Los Gatos Lions Club members helped a recently widowed woman to load her belongings for a move to Texas. The club was surprised with a check for $500 in gratitude. ON May 28, 50,000 free copies of a new monthly publication, Bay Area Parent of Teens, were distributed. Chelsea Clinton is on the cover of the June issue, which is also available at libraries and schools. Aim of the new magazine is to inform and educate parents about adolescent development and today's teen culture, says Sandy Moeckel, president of the Bay Area Publishing Group, which has an office on Alberto Way in Los Gatos. Says editor Sheila Dubin, an educator for the Children's Health Council in Palo Alto: "Parents need to confront their teens, but in a way that is productive. The worst thing to do is to get angry" when a teen has a problem, she said. TWO Saratoga High School students took top prizes in the Los Gatos Rotary Club's International Affairs Contest. Charles Wang took first prize of $1,000. Second place went to Ajay Narasimha. Students answered 60 exam questions and wrote an essay. HISTORY Club of Los Gatos, celebrating its centennial this year, gave philanthropic awards totaling $4,550 to 10 recipients. A $2,500 scholarship will go to a Los Gatos High School senior. Additional awards have been sent to Live Oak Day Care Center, Los Gatos Library Trust Fund (for children's books), Los Gatos Art Docents, Photographic Guild of Los Gatos (benefiting high school students), A Place for Teens and the Town Christmas Tree Foundation. Other awards went to Hospice of the Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Next Door: Solutions to Domestic Violence. Elected to guide the History Club in the year ahead are: JoAnn Stacy, president; Betty Ulrich, first vice-president; Marion Hegeman, second vice-president; Adrienne Avery, treasurer; Jocelyn Myers, recording secretary; Marion Kraii, corresponding secretary; Louise Segraves, auditor; and Fran Alfson, past president. FANS of John Steinbeck, who made Los Gatos his home here while writing The Grapes of Wrath, are interested in a new John Steinbeck Center now under construction in downtown Salinas.
