Los Gatos Weekly-TimesTown library invites kids to join in summer safariThe Los Gatos Town Library is gearing up for its 1997 summer reading club, "Reading Safari," as well as its summer afternoon activity program for youngsters. Reading Safari signups for kids and families begin June 12 and end Aug. 1; participants may continue to read for credit in the program until Aug. 24. After filling out a name badge, kids or parents receive reading folders to record the title, author and number of pages of every book they read or have read to them. These folders may be taken home or kept at the library. Kids receive a prize package after completing 10 books at their reading level. Parents receive a prize package for completing five books at their level. Books, magazines and books-on-tape are all eligible as "reading material," whether from the library or home. The kids' summer program series is held at 3:15 p.m. every Thursday from June 12 through July 31. The eight-week schedule features a summer safari club kick-off party; a concert by children's singer/songwriter Lisa Atkinson; a Snapdragon Puppets performance (at the Neighborhood Center); a Fourth of July celebration with music, stories and crafts; a presentation on insects and spiders from the Youth Science Institute; a performance of Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me by Word for Word, a Bay Area acting troupe (at the Neighborhood Center); folk music by Jim Stevens and bubble-making and -blowing activities with the Bubble Man.
