Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerThis cat has noticed that June is bringing many changes to the town of Los Gatos--perhaps because the month is halfway through the year, or perhaps there's a hot weather-induced restlessness. The Prowler first thought about this last week, when noisy machines lumbered along streets of the Almond Grove district, trimming and shredding the lush tree branches just in time for summer, when we need shade most. Wouldn't winter be a better choice, when stormy weather threatens to blow tree limbs into utility wires, and no one needs shade, anyway? While trees remain year after year, struggling businesses cannot. That's why this cat was sad to hear The Confectionery in Old Town is closing in June. The Hausle family bought it less than two years ago to keep it from closing and did a great job stocking it with decadently delicious new and old favorites. Too bad their sweet success didn't last; the Prowler will miss this old-fashioned candy store. The Rev. David Wolf is leaving the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos after 13 years of service to work with the church's Volunteers in Mission program in Sacramento. Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District superintendent Dr. Tod Likins is retiring this June after school is out, to be replaced by Dr. Cynthia Ranii, currently a high school principal in Fullerton and an administrator in a district office. Ranii has her work cut out for her at board meetings with all the hoopla surrounding the district's two high schools lately, but the cookies and sodas served at the monthly meetings may help lighten the load.
