Margaret Weyand
Former Los Gatos resident Margaret Thomas Weyand died on March 5.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Weyand earned a master's degree in music from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago in 1937. She and her family moved to Foster Road in Los Gatos soon after. Weyand joined the music faculty at San Jose State University, where she worked until 1945. While at SJSU, she appeared in many faculty recitals; she also gave several duet piano recitals with her sister Violet Thomas, who also lived in Los Gatos and worked at SJSU.
In 1945, Weyand and her husband moved to the East Coast, where she worked at the University of Pennsylvania, sang as a soloist in New Jersey and New York churches and gave piano and voice lessons.
Weyand lived in San Jose for the past 10 years, during which time she played the organ for the Christian Science Church in Campbell and accompanied her daughter Kathryn "Kayte" Weyand in several recitals in senior citizen facilities. Weyand belonged to the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Los Gatos and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Concert Association.
Survivors include daughter Kayte Weyand of Cupertino and sister Violet Thomas.
Memorial services have been held.
George Martin
Former Los Gatos resident George E. Martin, who had been residing in the Carmel area, died of complications of pneumonia on March 29. He was 88.
Born April 26, 1912, in Watsonville, Martin was a graduate of UC-Berkeley and worked in Santa Clara County as a landscape architect for 30 years. He lived in Los Gatos from 1941 through 1964, and was also a member of the Los Gatos Rotary Club.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Tim and Kay Martin of Naples, Fla., and Peter and Bev Martin of Anacortes, Wash.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Central Coast.
