Good Samaritan Hospital welcomes its Senior Friends

Good Samaritan Hospital, at 2425 Samaritan Drive at the San Jose/Los Gatos border, encourages all interested local senior citizens in the West Valley area to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone 50 and older. The seniors in Good Sam's growing group take part in months filled with activities, outings and informational programs. Some are free; others have small fees. Following are some upcoming events.

    * Using Medicines Wisely. On June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Good Sam auditorium, Dr. William Warshall will discuss drug interactions and side effects and offer tips on the best ways to take various medications. He will also review the use of dietary supplements and generic prescriptions.

    * Coping with Stress: Laughter, Exercise and Relaxation. This presentation, scheduled for June 14, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., teaches participants fun ways to reduce the stress from their lives. Register by calling 408.278.3130.

    * Lunch Bunch: Harry's Hofbrau. The Senior Friends Lunch Bunch meets the third Wednesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. This month the group meets June 20, at Harry's Hofbrau at 390 Saratoga Ave. RSVPs by June 18, are required; call Shirley Hendrickson at 408.269.5663.

    * Blood Pressure Screening. Free blood pressure screenings are available on June 19, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the hospital's main lobby. No appointment necessary.

Other Senior Friends activities include other health screenings, movie matinees, theater performances, mature driving courses, exercise groups and cooking classes. Membership is $15 per year. For information about membership or any of the above events, call 408.559.2555.
