Dave Knapp takes manager position in city of Cupertino

    By Dale Bryant

David Knapp, who has served as town manager of Los Gatos for the past 10 years, has been named city manager of Cupertino.

Of the surprise move, Knapp said, "I wasn't sure, but the opportunity presented itself, and it was too good to pass up."

The Cupertino City Council selected Knapp from a field of some 50 candidates.

Cupertino Mayor John Statton said of the decision: "David brings new energy and experiences to our city that will prove very beneficial as we address major issues, such as library rebuilding, revitalizing retail and promoting citizen involvement."

Statton also said Knapp's experience will serve the city well as the organization undergoes several transitions in its senior staff. The community development director recently retired, and the director of public works is expected to retire this year.

"We were very impressed with David's friendliness and his enthusiasm. We're confident that he'll be a very positive addition to our staff," Statton said.

Knapp told the Los Gatos Weekly Times, "The council and I are parting as good friends; I think we've had a mutually appreciative relationship. I know I've appreciated them.; they're a great council."

He explained that part of the attraction in Cupertino was the fact that it's a bigger community, and it's in the midst of several major projects, including building a new library and setting up a redevelopment agency.

Knapp's last day on the job in Los Gatos is July 9; he begins in Cupertino July 10.
