    LGHS junior wins Telluride scholarship

    Aviva Aron-Dine, a junior at Los Gatos High School, has been awarded a full scholarship to the 2000 Telluride Association summer Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The six-week-long educational program involves college-level seminars for highly motivated high school juniors.

    This year's 68 participants were chosen from nearly 600 applications from all parts of the U.S. and abroad. Applicants must score well on the PSAT test and receive recommendations from school personnel.

    CASA chooses winners of annual poster contest

    CASA held its 2000 poster contest during Drug Awareness Week. Students throughout Los Gatos submitted posters that campaign against alcohol and drug use. The submissions were judged for original idea and design.

    In the kindergarten category Evin Wieser of Loma Prieta School won. At the first-grade level Jennifer MacDonald of Blossom Hill received first place, Kathleen Guzman of Daves Avenue received second place and Eric Starov of Blossom Hill received third place. First-grade honorable mentions went to Joleen Guzman of Daves Avenue and Bradford Radonich and Jason Rasmussen of Loma Prieta.

    In grades three through five Kristin Leasia of St. Andrew's in Saratoga took first place with Brianna Bruce and Jeanette Erlendson of Loma Prieta tying for second. Elena Eichelberger of Lakeside placed third. Honorable mentions went to Jessica Walton and Phuong Bui of Van Meter and Melissa Forrette of Loma Prieta.

    In grades six through eight, Laney Chinn took first place, Bella Gaspich took second and Dean Roblee took third. All go to Fisher Middle School. Honorable mentions went to Jonathan Moultrap, Donna Battaglia and Joshua Ruebenson of Fisher Middle School.

    In the high school category, Mark Wong took first place and Eun Jang took second.

    All winners received checks, or gift certificates to the Wooden Horse.

    Tina Orsi Hartigan is volunteer of the year

    Tina Orsi Hartigan was honored as the Los Gatos Union School District volunteer of the year at a recent board meeting. Hartigan is the Blossom Hill School Home and School Club president. She has been a classroom volunteer for five years, a library volunteer for four years and a room parent for three years. Hartigan chaired both the Cookie Dough Sale and the Gift Wrap Sale for two years, and also chaired the Pumpkin Festival.

    She has served on the board of the Los Gatos Elementary Educational Foundation and is presently the group's director.

    Hartigan was the Blossom Hill School captain for the CATS campaign for one year and is a member of the resource council.
