A's upset Mets to tighten the Los Gatos Pony race
By Dick Sparrer
The Mets had every intention of distancing themselves from the pack in the Los Gatos Pony League standings.
The A's, though, had other ideas.
The A's came through with a 7-6 upset win over the Mets to create a logjam at the head of the heap in the Pony race. So tight are the standings, in fact, that only two games separate the top five teams in the race--and there are only six teams in the league.
The loss left the Mets in the first-place tie with the Diamondbacks, both clubs at 10-7. The Giants and Mariners are a game back, sharing third place with 9-8 marks, and the A's sits just two games behind in fifth place at 8-9.
The A's caused the mess with the nine-inning win over the Mets on May 24. Brian Dressman singled and moved around the bases on passed balls to break a 6-6 tie and give the A's the victory.
The single capped a big day for Dressman. He ripped a solo homer in the third and tripled and scored on a single by Russell Laubach in the seventh.
The Mets had rallied back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game in the seventh and send it into extra innings. Jordan Senner and Danny Politi each singled and scored on a double by Brian Wendt. Brett Davis then singled to knock in Wendt with the tying run.
Rishi Satia and Laubach combined to toss the A's to the important win. Mark Johnson and Danny Bates had two hits apiece for the winners. Adam Hudson ripped a double, and Matt Martini and Kevin Bakken added hits.
Jadd Correia doubled and tripled for the Mets, Davis singled and doubled, and Politi had two hits. Wes Piper, Evan Preskin and Gus Winkelman also had singles.
Dressman singled twice and homered, and Laubach homered, doubled and singled to lead the A's to a 10-0 win over the Mariners. Johnson and Kyle Bergland added two hits apiece.
Eric Rollins had two hits in the loss.
The A's were coming off back-to-back losses to the Mariners and Diamondbacks.
A three-run double by Jason Livingstone sparked the Mariners to a 4-1 win over the A's. Livingstone and Mike Brienzo each had two hits in the win, Rollins doubled, and Chad Cord, Mark Erickson and Donald Colletti added hits.
Martini, Johnson and Matt Bates had hits for the A's.
Patrick McDonald tossed a two-hit shutout to lift the Diamondbacks to a 10-0 win over the A's. Ben Walker doubled, and Josh Micelli, Jeremy Bays, Kyle Jensen, McDonald and Michael Robards each singled in the win.
Dressman and Bergland each singled for the A's.
The Diamondbacks dropped a pair of tough decisions recently, falling 3-0 to the Yankees and 3-2 to the Giants.
J.P. Grist, Jesse Barron and Greg Bridges combined to whirl a two-hit shutout for the Yanks in the 3-0 win over the D'backs.
Bridges singled and doubled in the win, and Charlie Self and Liam Smith had two hits apiece. Eric Brown doubled, and Grist and Barron chipped in with singles.
Ben Walker and McDonald each singled for the Diamondbacks.
The Giants took the Diamondbacks eight innings before nailing a tight 3-2 win. Nick Perrone broke a 2-2 tie when he singled, stole second and raced home on a single by Jarrett Kasper in the seventh inning.
But the D'Backs didn't go down without a fight. Robards singled with two outs, and a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bags. Robards attempted to score the tying run on a wild pitcher, but catcher Logan Shafer tagged him out to end the game.
Starters Dave Holtzman and McDonald were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through four innings before Kasper singled and scored in the fifth.
The Giants made it 2-0 with a run in the seventh. Spencer Maltbie singled and scored on a hit by Shafer.
But the Diamondbacks tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Jeremy Bays singled and romped home on a triple by McDonald. Jensen singled home McDonald to tie the game.
Holtzman singled and doubled in the win, and Shafer, Perrone and Kasper had two hits apiece. Kenny Rodrigues and Mark Guedenet also had hits in the win.
The Diamondbacks had beaten the Giants 8-1 earlier that week. McDonald singled and tripled, and Nathan Swartly and Bays each singled and doubled in the win.
Holtzman doubled, and Shafer had two hits for the Giants. Jeff Blue, Shafer, Bret Hampton and Perrone added singles.
In other recent action, Correia homered to lead the Mets past the Yankees 6-2.
Grist tossed a seven-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead the Yanks past the Mets 10-5. Self had three hits, Mark Helleboid doubled twice, Matt Hirakawa tripled and singled, and Bridges had two hits.
Livingstone struck out 11 and whirled a four-hitter to pace the Mariners to an 8-3 win over the Mets. Nat Henry doubled twice and singled to knock in three runs.
