Los Gatos Weekly-Times1997's Music in the Plaza series kicks off on June 22By Shari Kaplan For a dozen hot summer Sundays, Los Gatos residents and visitors alike can enjoy free concerts in an array of musical genres as the Los Gatos Arts Commission's 1997 season of Music in the Plaza gets off the ground. MIP is sponsored by donations from individuals, small-business merchants and large businesses, which the nonprofit Arts Commission earmarks to offset the cost of booking performers and other expenses related to organizing and publicizing the concert series. Contributors of $25 or more are recognized in the concert program. The series runs every Sunday from June 22 through Aug. 31; all concerts take place at 5 p.m. in the Los Gatos Town Plaza, except for the July 4 San Jose Wind Symphony performance, which takes place on the Los Gatos High School front lawn at 1:30 p.m. In order, this year's series features * gospel music by singers from Los Gatos' Calvary Church * R&B, reggae and Motown tunes by Pacific Standard Time * patriotic orchestral arrangements by the San Jose Wind Symphony * bluegrass, country and folk by Side-saddle & Co. * Fleetwood Mac music by the costumed members of Rumours, preceded by opening act Bobby Baert * light opera from members of the San Jose Opera Guild * soul and R&B by Midnight Hour * favorites of the '60s through the '80s by Holiday * rock and R&B from Lady Bo and the B.C. Horns * jazz with the Wally Schnalle Quintet * Irish tunes by Paradise Lost * music and dancing of Mexico performed by Mariachi Tapatio and members of the Grupo Folklorico dance troupe The Los Gatos Arts Commission always welcomes donations toward MIP.
