Clay classes set at Blossom Hill

Blossom Hill School will offer six weeks of clay classes this summer for children between the ages of 7 and 12. Each week a different project will be featured. The tuition fee of $70 will cover all materials, tools, and firing.

Kim Esposito teaches the classes that begin on June 23. Ages 7-9 will meet on Fridays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 10- to 12-year-olds will meet on Mondays from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

June 17 is the deadline for registration; each class is limited to 10 students. For more information, call Joanne at 356-9035 or Kim at 358-0403.

St. Mary's team places third

St. Mary's School in Los Gatos recently placed third in the state Diocesan Competition held at St. Matthias High School.

The team of 10 junior high students competed against seven other schools for the title. Jacky Larson, Sara Triplett, Jessica Herrera, Natalie Storm, Jared Shawlee, Chet Kasper, Katie Allan, Damien Hall, Drew Brown and Phillip Janich competed in eight individual events and two group events. Each student was coached by a parent or teacher in subjects ranging from literature to science. The team events were Logic and Super Quizzes in which the students were asked brain teasers involving math and logic.

LGHS seniors earn scholarships

Two Los Gatos High School seniors--Adelia Barber and Deva Dawson--each won a $1,000 college scholarship from Cornish & Carey Residential Real Estate.

Barber and Dawson are among 26 students from Bay Area high schools to earn these scholarships, which Cornish & Carey has awarded for the past nine years. The awards are based on community service activities and high academic achievement. All recipients must be planning to attend accredited four-year colleges or universities.

This year's winners were selected from 150 applicants nominated by the principals and faculty of participating high schools in the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo and Contra Costa.

Tobacco Control Coalition recognizes L.D. Hirschklau

The Tobacco Control Coalition of Santa Clara County recently held a reception for winners of an annual awards program recognizing individual and group contributions to a smoke-free community.

Among the winners was Monte Sereno resident L.D. Hirschklau, developer of innovative tobacco-cessation and education programs for students in the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District. The coalition also honored 44 county pharmacies and drugstores that do not sell tobacco.
