Public hearing set on Longs

By Clarence Cromwell

A Longs Drug Store is expected to open its doors at Kings Court Shopping Center within a year, but first Longs needs permission to remodel its facade and convert five small shops into one big space.

A public hearing on Longs' site and architecture application has been set tentatively for June 25.

The design includes a new facade with an illuminated nameplate and copper-colored awnings. The store will go between Lunardi's and Bank of America and will employ about 20 people.

Longs already received permission Dec. 11 to operate a 15,756-square-foot store at Kings Court and to sell alcohol.

One condition imposed on the store was an extension of the soundwall dividing the center's rear alley from Magneson Loop. The wall is to protect adjacent homes from outdoor lighting and noise behind the store. No one opposed the store or any part of the renovation during a public hearing in December, said Los Gatos planner Kristine Syskowski.

"We just did that out of courtesy to the neighborhood," she explained.
