Keeping Horticulture Alive
Garden enthusiasts eager to maintain some semblance of this valley's agricultural and horticultural past gathered on June 4, at the Los Gatos High School's academic gardens to dedicate a new arbor to Gene Verkuyl, who, for more than two decades, ran the agricultural and horticulture program at the school. Verkuyl (center), who has moved to the Sierra foothills, returned for the dedication and was joined by Knowlton Shore (left), Brad Tomy, who built the Gene Verkuyl arbor, Vic Collord (second from right) and Les Kishler (far right). During the summer, the academic gardens--now planted and awaiting the productive summer season--become the adopt-a-gardens, under the direction of Collord. He encourages anyone who'd like to adopt one of the 50-square-foot boxes for the summer to contact him at 408.354.7106. There's no charge, and Collord will do the watering. In exchange for a little weeding, adoptive gardeners will reap a bountiful harvest. The gardens are next to the parking lot at A Place for Teens. Seniors and apartment dwellers are encouraged to participate.
