Where, oh, where is the time capsule buried?

    By Mary Ann Cook

TIME CAPSULE QUANDARY: There's a time capsule buried somewhere in the Louise Van Meter Elementary School front yard that was planted there to be opened in the Year 2000. Since that hallmark has been reached, it seems only fitting that it's time for an unearthing.

Trouble is, no one remembers where the memorable memento is. Or what class did the burying. 'Tis a puzzle that Marlene Vieira Harden is working on and she needs help in the untying of the knot. She can remember that a class she was in at Van Meter buried a capsule, but she can't remember what year.

Her best estimate is that it was somewhere between 1985 and 1988. She has asked several teachers, as well as former principal Ron Harder, and no one seems to have any recollection. She's hoping someone with a better memory of the '80s will come forward.

"It would be such a treasure to uncover this mystery," she says.

To this end, she is asking Los Gatos Weekly-Times readers to search their memory banks through the summer. Many of those at Van Meter in the '80s are now in college and, hopefully, home for the summer.

Harden's phone number is 408.356.5249 and her email address is marleneV21@ aol.com. She would appreciate any memory joggings passed on.

HIGHEST HONOR: Laura Kristin Lindecker, a San Jose State University student won the highest honor awarded by the school--Outstanding Graduating Senior of the class of 1999-2000 and valedictorian.

She was one of two among 8,000 graduates cited for extraordinary academic achievement and personal accomplishments. Lindecker maintained a grade average of 3.8 while also serving as director of speakers for the Financial Management Association in the College of Business.

She earned a bachelor's of science degree in finance and worked as a volunteer for Cisco Systems, Prestige Exposition Services and Merrill Lynch. In addition to her academic work, she served as a tutor and a Eucharist minister for St. Mary's and Sacred Heart churches.

Lindecker was one of three female finalists for the College of Business Alpha Al Sirat Award. During SJSU graduation ceremonies she shared the speakers' platform with President Robert Caret, the Smothers Brothers and U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren. A Monte Sereno resident, she is the daughter of Phil and Diane Lindecker.

HOT DOG: Here's a Los Gatos dog who went to the nationals. That would be Rudy, named for the underdog Rudy in the movie of the same name who wouldn't let his size deter him from becoming a member of the Notre Dame football team.

The four-footed, Los Gatos Rudy is a short-haired, red, miniature dachshund, and he won a berth in the fifth annual Wienerschnitzel wiener national race held in the Los Alamitos Race Course earlier this month. His owners are Anna and Tony Neal.

Some 64 of the low-slung dogs were chosen to compete in the 50-yard dash, based on the creativity of their entries. Rudy's entry said that since he'd been fixed, "this would be my one and only chance to show my manly dogginess." He further described himself as "a red-radical record-breaker who is ready to risk the race."

Unfortunately reality reared its ugly head in the form of an aggressive dog at the starting post who set off after Rudy. So the Los Gatos entry spent the race time defending himself, ducking, weaving, running in circles, not the pattern that race officials had in mind at all.

The Neals journeyed the farthest of any of the entries and said the weekend jaunt was worth it, despite the fact that no one disciplined the attacker. Aggressive behavior and owners running alongside their dogs were forbidden, according to contest rules, but neither ruling was adhered to, Anna reported.

The Neals heard about the race through a vet/friend in the area, Dr. John Unflat. Money raised goes to the Seal Beach Animal Care Center, which last year received more than $10,000. First prize was $500, plus the winning pooch gets a new doghouse, a replica of the A-frame restaurant.

NEW OFFICERS: The History Club of Los Gatos announces its new officers: Betty Ulrich, president; Diana Crawford, first vice president; Jocelynn Myers, second v.p.; Louise Seagraves, treasurer; Lillian Harley, recording secretary; Josephine Polos, corresponding secretary.

Others are Melanie Boothroyd, auditor; Donna Hadley, editor; Sara Morabito, parliamentarian; Fran Alfson, past president. Directors at large are Billie Untiedt, Marie Gordon, Dorothy Rouse, Amy Parsons and Betty Ermert.

The club's silent auction this spring netted $4,000 for Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence.

THE WRITE STUFF: Mark Schumacher of Los Gatos won first place in the free-verse category at the recent Olympiad of the Arts 2000 sponsored by the West Valley/Mission Colleges Foundation. He also won honorable mention in the short-story division of the competition.

REUNION: The Los Gatos High School class of '63 will hold a reunion dinner/dance June 17, at 7 p.m. at Los Gatos Lodge. Call Sandy (Spafford) Moore for reservations at 408.354.1512.
