What happens when a recipe combines flavors of the Baroque European tradition of the past with quality Mexican craftsmanship of the present?

This piquant morsel, tucked into a small shop on N. Santa Cruz Avenue, is SpanishMasters Creative Studio. Owner José Cano opened his doors a month ago with a twofold plan: combine his advertising and media business--geared mainly toward the Hispanic community--with a Baroque furniture showroom.

Although Cano expects to attract interior designers and decorators more than the casual furniture shopper, the showroom is open to everyone and offers pieces in various price ranges. Included are wooden benches with liftable seats, large mirrors framed in wood and cabinets, bars, chests and tables with hand-applied gold leafing and other ornate art.

Following many trips to Mexico, where he often films commercials for ad clients, Cano noticed the meticulous, original work of artisans with skills passed down for generations. They follow the Baroque style in their use of ornamentation, embellishments and use of curves more than straight lines. All pieces bear an antique-like finish, thanks to eight coats of polychrome paint wash and a protective wax.

Floor and table lamps crafted with brilliant stained-glass mosaics are also on display. Customized stained-glass windows and wall pieces are available for purchase by the square foot. A grand opening is set for July 31, 6-8 p.m.

SpanishMasters Creative Studio, 466 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday. 399-9020.
