Los Gatos Weekly-TimesCancer Society will benefit from Relay for Life at LGHSThe American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life fundraiser takes place June 27-28 in two Santa Clara County locations this year: its usual venue around the Los Gatos High School track and, for the first time, Gilroy High School. During that weekend, communities throughout the country observe the event, which consists of a continuous relay of teams walking or running to raise money for the ACS's many programs, including cancer research, health education programs and community outreach. Last year's relay in Los Gatos was ranked fifth in the nation for funds raised in a community of its size. The 16 hours of festivities begin at 7 p.m. with a cancer survivors' walk on the LGHS track. At 9:30 p.m., stadium lights dim in deference to the Luminary Ceremony, in which people light candles in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of its victims. The relay involves teams of people who have gathered pledges from friends and family. All team members need not be on the track at the same time--some don pajamas in tents while others run--but each team must be represented at all times. Through the night and day, there are many additional activities, including goodie bags, balloons, prizes, a disc jockey, live bands, country line dancing lessons with Saratogan Clareen Dunivin and aerobic workouts with Deborah Yates, Diane Teresi and Sandy Baker. There will also be prizes going to the team with the most creatively decorated tent. Underwriters and supporters include Community Hospital of Los Gatos, KICU- Channel 36, Canteen Corporation and Pinn Brothers Contractors. C.B. Hannegan's will provide barbecued food for the evening. Individuals or businesses can sponsor a team for $150, walk or run in the event for $40 per person, sponsor a single run for any amount, buy a luminary for $5 or donate merchandise or supplies.
