Downtown businesses hit by late-night burglars

By Shari Kaplan

During the late-night or early-morning hours of May 30 and 31, four downtown Los Gatos businesses were broken into by one or more unknown burglars.

According to Sgt. Mike Barbieri of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, police investigators believe the same person or people may be responsible for the string of crimes because all four businesses were hit in the same night and are within walking--or perhaps running--distance of each other. Other aspects of the modus operandi was also similar.

The Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company on W. Main Street had its back door kicked open and about $1,000 stolen from a cash register drawer, Barbieri said. At Beaux Cheveux, a salon on N. Santa Cruz Avenue, the front door was kicked in, the place ransacked and approximately $100 stolen from the cash register.

Two neighboring businesses on Village Lane were also hit. Virtues Salon had its front door kicked in but nothing stolen, even though the business was ransacked. Los Gatos Floors suffered the least, with a kicked-in storage-room door but no other damages.

Barbieri said it did not appear that any of the four businesses had burglar alarms installed. Or if they did, he added, none of them worked. Police investigators ask anyone who may have been around these businesses that night to call the investigations bureau if they have any information or noticed any suspicious activity. The number is 354-6825.
