Olympians swim in Santa Clara meet
The road to Atlanta will travel through the Santa Clara Valley when top swimmers headed to the Summer Olympics compete in the Santa Clara Valley International Invitational Swim Meet June 27-30.
United States Olympians, featuring Jeff Rouse and Gary Hall Jr., will compete against top swimmers from all over the world in the four-day meet at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
Rouse, a world record-holder from Stanford, and Hall, billed as "America's next Olympic star," top a list of 19 U.S. Olympians scheduled to compete in the meet. Ryan Berube, Brad Bridgewater, Ray Carey, Josh Davis, Kurt Grote, John Hargis, Joe Hudepohl, Brad Schumacher and Scott Tucker are other members of the men's Olympic team competing in Santa Clara.
Women's Olympic team members Whitney Hedgepeth, Lisa Jacob, Kristine Quance, Annette Salmeen, Cristina Teuscher, Jenny Thompson, Melanie Valerio and Allison Wagner will swim in Santa Clara.
Former Olympic star Janet Evans is also expected to swim in the event.
Martin Zubero, a world record-holder from Spain, is one of the international stars who will compete in Santa Clara. Swimmers from Jamaica, Great Britain, Australia, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, Brazil and Canada will be among countries taking part in the meet before heading to Atlanta.
Tickets for the meet are priced at $3 per day or $10 for a four-day pass.
Youth football
Los Gatos Pop Warner Football will hold final registration at a parents meeting on July 13, 10 a.m., at Fisher Middle School.
The organization will hold signups at 11 a.m. for football players and cheerleaders, ages 8-14. Players must live in Los Gatos, Saratoga or Campbell to be eligible. For more information, call 270-1443.
