Los Gatos celebrates Fourth with concert on LGHS lawnBy Shari Kaplan Los Gatos will have a blast this Fourth of July with its traditional day full of all-American fun, food and music on the lawn of Los Gatos High School. At 11:30 a.m., the LGHS Band Boosters will sell barbecue lunches to support the school's Wildcat Marching Band. Families are welcome to bring their own picnics as well. Next comes a free performance by contemporary jazz guitarist and Bay Area native James Robinson. As heard on his debut CD, Robinson's music ranges from acoustic nylon and rhythmic steel string songs to high-energy, electric jazz-fusion band numbers. The San Jose Wind Symphony, conducted by Darrell Johnston, performs at 1:30 p.m.--also for free--a variety of popular and patriotic songs. The concert's finale is Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, accentuated by cannons fired by members of the James River Squadron, a re-enactment military unit of the National Civil War Association. The Los Gatos Presbyterian Church's handbell choir also performs during the finale. Sponsors of the event include the Los Gatos Arts Commission and its Music in the Plaza program, the Los Gatos Rotary Club and Smythe European Sales. Dale Chambers and outgoing LGHS principal Ted Simonson helped make the concert possible. Free parking is available behind the high school. For more information about the concert, call 927-7597.
