The Prowler

Warm weather and sunny days aren't the only things to arrive now that naughty El Niño has pretty much packed his bags for summer vacation. Kitten litters have also begun arriving--lots of them!

According to this cat's friends at the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley, the number of incoming felines doubles around this time of year due to unspayed cats giving birth. Little mouths require big amounts of food to keep them fed.

And so the "Food for the Kittens" campaign is now under way. The Humane Society seeks donations of unopened bags of dry cat food and unopened cans of kitten food. Donations of checks, although inedible, are also welcome. Call 727-3383 for more info.

Speaking of young cats, the Prowler has some fun ideas for the human equivalent of kittens--children. On July 2 at 3:15 p.m., the Los Gatos Library staff offers a storytime and craft activity on the life of the monarch butterfly. It's recommended for ages 4 and older.

On July 8 and 15, kids interested in birds might want to attend parts one and two of a workshop held at the Wild Bird Center, located in King's Court shopping center. The first session teaches kids about birds through stories and songs; the second session includes a bird-identification walk through a local park. Call 358-WILD for reservations.

For readers seeking sophistication, stop by Cafe Rouge on July 1 for the coffee shop's monthly open-mic poetry night. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. with a memorial reading of works by the late Greg Keith. Afterward, audience members can step up to the microphone and read poetry of their own. The java joint is located at 42 Elm St.
