General Plan Task Force begins look at town vision

Report to council due in January

By Suzy Ramirez

The process of developing a long-range vision for Los Gatos into the next century has begun with the establishment of the 30-member General Plan Task Force by the Los Gatos Town Council.

From 54 applicants, Mayor Joanne Benjamin and Councilmember Jan Hutchins selected 27 people to serve on the task force and requested three additional members to represent the Charter Oaks and Golf Links/Wimbledon neighborhoods and the business community.

According to Planning Director Lee Bowman, Benjamin and Hutchins used a list of criteria in choosing members, including age, geographic area, education, employment, whether the person was a property owner or renter and other factors in an effort to ensure that task force members represent a complete cross-section of the community.

The objectives of the task force are to identify issues and inconsistencies in the general plan, the hillside specific plan and downtown specific plan and help the Town Council achieve a sense of how the community feels about growth in Los Gatos.

The task force will meet seven times from June to December and give a final presentation to the Town Council in January 1998.

Public Affairs Management (PAM) will facilitate task force meetings and consult with members on approaches to meeting objectives. The town is paying some $45,000 in consultant's fees.
