Furniture for Small Fry

Another fledgling has arrived--this time in Los Gatos--to join the growing brood of upscale juvenile-furnishings stores known as Baby's Nest.

The third in a chain that includes San Francisco and Walnut Creek stores, Baby's Nest of Los Gatos opened in May to offer parents custom-designed bedding and furniture for their babies and children, along with a small but tasteful selection of baby clothing and giftware.

"My mom always had a philosophy that if you make a child's bedroom theme-oriented, it can benefit them--give them something that's theirs and an environment that's unique to them," explains co-owner Suzee Dewey, who, with business partner Fred Oberfelder, decided to open in Los Gatos because so many people from the West Valley area were ordering from the San Francisco store.

Compared to large retailers of baby wear and furniture, Baby's Nest carries distinctively designed merchandise and has exclusivity agreements with many suppliers to ensure these goods won't pop up everywhere. Many items, such as dressers and bed head- and footboards, can be customized in color and motif.

Among the items to be found at Baby's Nest are cribs (all of which conveniently convert to toddler-size beds), child-size chairs, child beds, bedding, changing tables, chests, dressers, rocking chairs and footrests for nursing mothers, rocking horses, stuffed animals, toys, bibs, clothing, lamps and colorful wooden growth sticks for measuring a toddler's height.

Some bedroom furniture for older children and adults is also available.

Baby's Nest, 7 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Hours are Mon., 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tues.-Wed., 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sun. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. 354-5600.
