The Prowler
The hills are alive with the sound of music! Although not exactly on a par with the Austrian hillsides from The Sound of Music, Los Gatos will also be echoing with some merry melodies in the near future.
On July 10, a great Celtic band called Men of Worth comes to Skyland Church in the Santa Cruz mountains to play for the congregation's Gourmet Country Barbecue event. A fundraiser to help buy a new sound system for the small country church at 25100 Skyland Road, the event takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. and includes a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings. When the weather's right, there's even a view clear down to Monterey Bay!
Men of Worth consists of Scotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher. The Prowler heard this duo perform at the Highland Games festival in nearby Campbell last year and can vouch for their musical prowess in both original songs and Celtic and folk classics. They're also quite friendly and funny! For ticket prices or directions to the church, call 353-4366.
For those who wish they could play music of their own but don't know how or where to obtain lessons, the Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation offers a class titled, appropriate enough, Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People on July 18.
Using an innovative chord approach method, experienced instructor Carol Cox Faust teaches participants enough to play any song from any piece of sheet music by the time their workshop is over. Later that same day, Faust offers a hands-on workshop for those interested in blues or boogie-woogie style playing. Call 354-8700 for times, fees or other information.
