Men's quad rows to the gold
By Dick Sparrer
There were no other shells around. And it would be another 11 seconds before another boat would float across the finish line.
That was the impressive margin of victory posted by the Los Gatos Rowing Club's men's quad team at the U.S. Rowing Junior Nationals held last month at Lake Harsha, located east of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The foursome of Donald Welsh, Steve Trayer, David Nielsen and stroke Eric Shoemaker struck gold in the 2,000-meter event, finishing well ahead of the seven other competitors in the men's quad final.
The men's quad event includes four rowers with two oars each and no coxswain.
Welsh, Nielsen and Shoemaker are each 1999 graduates of Los Gatos High School, and Trayer is a sophomore at Los Altos.
In other results at the Junior Nationals, the Los Gatos men's lightweight 8+ finished fourth, and the women's quad won the petite final. Los Gatos also had a second men's quad team in the competition.
Rowing Camp
The Los Gatos Rowing Club will host a summer camp for boys and girls entering the seventh and eighth grades.
The week-long camp, held at the Lexington Reservoir boathouse, will run July 19-23, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. each day. The cost of $175 per person includes instruction, lunch each day and a camp T-shirt.
