Petrillo qualifies for National Junior Olympics

    By Dick Sparrer

For most middle school athletes, the sports season wrapped up last May, just before the end of the school year.

Not so for Fisher's Matthew Petrillo.

Petrillo capped an outstanding spring season by winning the mile at the county championships. But when the school year ended, he kept running--and he ran his way into the Junior Olympic National Track and Field Championships.

Petrillo will be on the track in three events when the Junior Olympics July 24-29 in the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex at Cal State Sacramento. And he earned his place at the prestigious meet with an outstanding showing at the Pacific Association Regional Championships held June 22-24 in San Pablo.

Running in the 11-12 age group, Petrillo finished first in the 3,000 meters, second in the 1,500 meters and third in the 800 meters. Since the top three in each event qualify for the nationals, Petrillo will run all three when more than 6,500 athletes from across the nation converge in Sacramento later this month for the Junior Olympics.

Petrillo was named the most valuable player on the Fisher track team this past spring after winning the county title in the mile.
