Cheesy promotion pays off for Los Gatan
By Mary Ann Cook
THEY'VE GOT RHYTHM: People are still talking about the joyous program the Rhythm Makers put on at Montalvo. The Rhythm Makers are clients from HOPE Rehabilitation Services who sing and play their hearts out, along with a handful of non-disabled volunteers.
Some of the volunteers are from Buchser School in Santa Clara. David Ladd Anderson is the Rhythm Makers' coach and also teaches at Buchser. Three members of David Ladd Downtown All-Stars played back-up at the performance. The Rhythm Makers employ maracas, gourds, claves and bongo drums.
Montalvo's outreach program is the sponsor and the program is patterned on one developed in Bethesda, Md. Lisa Ramirez of Montalvo's outreach, and Wayne Malarich of HOPE went to Maryland to study the program. There will be a repeat next year.
"It's wonderful to see how much self-confidence they gain through their success," says Ramirez. "They're wonderful role models for the disabled." So infectious is the performance that the audience is "up out of their seats, singing and dancing."
PIZZA FOR A YEAR: Andrew Carroll of Los Gatos won free pizza for a year in a promotion sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board, as part of its "It's the Cheese" campaign. When Carroll ordered from Chicago Style Pizza some months ago, the delivery person was Cheesy, the company mascot, and 24 more pizzas were included in his order.
Cheesy visited randomly selected pizza places, and the first order of the day won the pizza-for-a-year prize.
ACADEMIC HONOR: Lisa Greenfield of Los Gatos was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic Superior Team. The organization honors teams and individuals for achieving GPAs over 3.0.
In the superior ranking, as in Greenfield's case, a student earns between 3.41-3.70 GPA. She is a starting goal keeper for George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a '97 grad of Los Gatos High School. The Washington team won an overall GPA of 3.28, making them second in the nation.
BIKE-A-THON CYCLIST: Andy Seigel will bike the 200-mile trek across Massachusetts to raise money for cancer research Aug. 4 and 5. The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. More than 3,500 riders are expected to participate.
To contribute to Seigel's ride, the address is PMC-Jimmy Fund, 77 Fourth Ave., Needham, MA 02494. Indicate it's for Seigel.
EMPHASIS ON PARKS: Kik and Jim Sugai are back from a trip to the Southwest where they concentrated on the national parks of Zion, Bryce, Canyonland and Arches. A busman's holiday for Jim, since he was LG parks supervisor for many years before his retirement.
And the word retirement is a funny one to use in his case, since Jim spends a good portion of his "free" time now at Oak Meadow, helping maintain the carousel.
HISTORY CLUB: In its most profitable fundraising year ever, the History Club of Los Gatos donated $1,000 to these Los Gatos organizations: LG town library, Live Oak Adult Day Care Center, St. Luke's Pantry, Community Against Substance Abuse (CASA). The Los Gatos Museum received $800 and the Los Gatos Photography Guild $200.
The club will also give $5,000 to San Jose-based Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence. Officers for the coming year are Betty Ulrich, president; Phyliss Hardin, 1st V.P.; Billie Untiedt, 2nd V.P.; Louise Segraves, treasurer; Jocelynn Myers, recording secretary.
NEW GRADS: Stefan Donald Arnaudo graduated from Cal Poly. He is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, industrial engineering honor society. He's the son of Rose and Donald Arnaudo of Monte Sereno.
Alex Chia-Hwa Hsu received a B.S. in engineering from Brown University. He is the son of the Wei-Li Hsus of Monte Sereno.
Julia Drees graduated magna cum laude from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Her B.A. degree is in chemistry with a concentration in cell and molecular biology/biochemistry. Her parents are Catherine Drees of Los Gatos and Peter Drees of San Jose. Colby was the first New England all-male college to admit women.
Shoshanna Meira Pomerantz graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a B.A. in international affairs. Nobel Prize Winner and former president of Poland Lech Walsea gave the commencement address.
NUPTIALS: John Schrager and Mary Wanderi were married in St. Paul, Minn., and honeymooned in a Bavarian village. This village was in Leavenworth, Wash., for those who want to go Bavarian without going over the sea.
The bride is a psychology professor at Marquette University; the groom a lawyer.
Schrager is the son of Carol Schrager of Los Gatos. The other Schrager son, Jeffrey, is now flying a 747--to Paris and Honolulu. An envious flight pattern.
