    The Prowler

While the Prowler is a people-friendly, computer-savvy cat, this feline's first love lies with the great outdoors. Recently, the Prowler found a perfect combination of these seemingly opposite interests: a new book titled Animals of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Written by Bob Piwarzyk, Marie Krajci and the late Barbara Lauck, this 70-page gem gives brief yet interesting descriptions of 64 animals found in our own misty, tree-covered mountain range. Illustrations are by Stephanie Retsek.

Published by the Mountain Parks Foundation, the paperback was founded by a group of donors interested in wildlife awareness. It's a nice little tome for anyone who hikes or camps around here. The book is available in California State Parks, in Santa Cruz County bookstores, or by calling 831.335.3174.

Speaking of outdoor activities, the Youth Science Institute plans its next Summer Night Hike for July 22, at 8 p.m. Sorry Los Gatans--it's not in Vasona Lake County Park this time, but in Sanborn-Skyline County Park in nearby Saratoga. Led by the YSI's Sanborn Nature Center manager Patricia Kucker, the hour-and-a-half walk takes children, teens and adults through the evening forest. Reservations are required, so give them a jingle at 408.867.6940, or 408.356.4945.

And now to close with something not at all Nature-related! Does that make it "unnatural"? At any rate, Studio 42 Gallery, at 23 N. Santa Cruz Ave., invites the public to enjoy its free Summer Music Series. Every Saturday night from 7:30 to 10 p.m., various local guitarists will perform inside the gallery, through September.
