Joe Winstead a nice name for a stadium
This letter is a tribute to a man who has been a friend and mentor to thousands of Los Gatos High School students over the past 40 years. He has been a varsity baseball coach and had a remarkable record. But, more importantly, Joe Winstead has been a great person.
He always put things in perspective and never got caught up in the "winning is everything" mentality. Joe always was there for his players and Joe cared about them as people first.
I had the opportunity to both play for and coach with Joe. He is as fine a person as I have ever had the good fortune to meet and know. I hope that all of the students that played for Joe and had his classes can reflect on his friendly way of teaching and coaching.
Joe is truly an icon and it would be wonderful if the high school honored his dedication and leadership with a memorial. May I suggest renaming the baseball field to Joe Winstead Stadium and enclosing it to properly honor a very humble person and an overall great guy.

Seniors need to mobilize
I applaud the article "Age Wave" written by Sandy Sims in the June 30 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. Maybe this article will serve as the catalyst to get the citizens of Los Gatos mobilized and motivated to press the town fathers to correct a long-standing inequity by establishing a true senior citizens' center.
If we look at all the cities around us, each one has a well-rounded program located within a functional building which serves the needs of its seniors. Only Los Gatos is lacking in having a dedicated senior center.
The excuse proffered by the town fathers, including the mayor and town manager, is that the seniors have not complained, so why should the town take the initiative to serve the needs of a portion of its citizens in a meaningful way.
Town Manager David Knapp is quoted as saying, "I haven't heard a senior complaint in a year," which he uses to justify the apathy on the part of town officials.
Let Sandy's article be the spark which mobilizes both seniors and non-seniors alike to petition our town fathers to accommodate our seniors in this era of budget surpluses. I would offer to help start a committee to galvanize our community into action by recognizing the needs of the seniors. All interested persons should contact me by phone or mail and hopefully we can arrange an organizational meeting of interested persons. Call me at 356-9016, or write: 220 Dover St., Los Gatos, 95032.

Turning Alma College into open space is great!
I would like to congratulate the Midpeninsula Open Space District for purchasing the former Alma College property. As a Boy Scout, I am sure that I will enjoy hiking in this area with fellow scouts.
When greedy people try to buy nature, and develop it into golf courses and luxury homes, one wonders if these people are truly sane. I mean, nature is far more important than golf.
I am a golfer, but I have respect for nature, too. I would not dream of building a golf course in the midst of Mother Nature's great kingdom.
Congratulations to all the environmentalists who made this purchase possible.

DeCinzo gets our attention --as he should
Regarding the DeCinzo cartoon controversy, we have always been among his fans.
Thank you for the two excellent commentaries you published in the June 30 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. Surely the prime purpose of a cartoon is to draw attention to a "happening" of interest, and not to give anyone a pat on the back for their good works. DeCinzo certainly does get our attention!
To be the subject of a cartoon is a kind of compliment, as only people who actually make the news, or do something that most of us are concerned about, would be considered.

Music was the silent type
Guess what local TV station recently played silent music videos in the evening, through the night, and until nearly 10 a.m. the next morning when someone finally came in and turned the sound on. Anyway, you could have watched Toscanini conducting the William Tell Overture in silence.

Debating about the cartoons is wrong
Wrong, Wrong, Very bad--Editorial cartoons should not spark debate about the cartoon but rather the opinion offered.
Debate about the cartoon diminishes the import about the issue to which the opinion is directed. Sophomorism also diminishes its sponsors in the eyes of those who value genuine opinion, wit and style.
