Seats up for grabs in school districts

A total of 13 Los Gatos school district board seats, 11 full-term and one short-term, are up for grabs in the Nov. 3 general election. The Los Gatos Union School District, Lakeside Joint School District, and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District each have three seats available, and the Loma Prieta Joint Union School District has three full-term seats and one short-term seat to fill.

To qualify for a seat, candidates must live in the district for which they are applying, be at least 18 years old and be a registered voter. Hopefuls also must obtain the signatures of at least 20 registered voters in their district in order to be eligible.

Nomination forms can be picked up either at each school district's main office or at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office. The forms must be filed at the Registrar's Office, located at 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2 in San Jose no later than Aug 7.

Power outages short-circuit plans

If one power failure didn't get local residents last week, the other one probably did.

On July 7, parts of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno lost their electricity during two unrelated power outages. The first one occurred at about 11:40 a.m. at the substation at the Los Gatos Civic Center, according to PG&E spokesman Scott Blakey.

Approximately 6,000 customers were affected when PG&E turned off the power to repair an oil leak near a bank of transformers.

At about 3:24 p.m., a jumper wire on a power pole failed somewhere in town, causing 2,467 customers to lose their power. About 1,000 people got their power back by 6:30 p.m.; the others had to wait until about 7:30 p.m.
