Ramsay wins AAUW contest

Shannon Ramsay, senior at Los Gatos High School, was one of two winners of the San Jose Branch American Association of University Women Scholarship essay contest. Shannon and 80 other high school seniors and community college women wrote essays that were judged by a panel of current and retired teachers. The two award-winning essays were then read at the general meeting of the AAUW on May 16.

Teen center seeks new board members

A Place For Teens, known as The Outhouse, is seeking members for its board of directors. Some members will rotate off the board in June, leaving the Outhouse with vacancies and a need for dedicated and enthusiastic people. The Outhouse has particular need for those with skills in law, finance and accounting, contracting, word processing, fundraising, grant writing and event and activity planning. Located behind Los Gatos High School, The Outhouse is run entirely by adult and teen volunteers from the community. For more information, contact Gladie Rabitz at 354-7357.

SJSU honors local students

The San Jose State Alumni Association recently honored two local students for outstanding scholastic and personal achievements. Mary Foley of Monte Sereno and Christine Rathe-Iwamoto of Los Gatos were among 17 students selected by their college deans for outstanding scholastic and personal achievements.

The association rewarded Foley, chosen by the dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, and Rathe-Iwamoto, selected by the College of Education, with a $1,000 scholarship.

Speak-UP! seeks female role models

The Speak-Up! Leadership Program for Girls is searching for female role models to facilitate a 12-week after-school or evening leadership program for middle-school girls throughout Santa Clara County.
