The Prowler

Fun in the sun--and in the shade--is the theme of this week's column. Thanks to our sleek fur, felines don't burn easily, but the Prowler does know that early mornings are a good time to be out-of-doors because the sun's rays aren't as strong. What better time for a guided gastronomic tour of the Los Gatos Farmers' Market?

This cat found a food-related fax last week that was quite fascinating. On July 19, visitors to the "FM"--as the Prowler fondly calls the Farmers' Market in the Town Plaza--can participate in a walking tour led by David Kinch, chef and proprietor of Sent Sovi restaurant in Saratoga.

The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. at the market information table. Kinch, who shops at local markets for organic seasonal fruits and veggies for his restaurant, leads guests to vendors' booths and discusses how to choose produce for flavor and variety. He'll also share food-preparation tips and recipes. The tour lasts about an hour, and guests are welcome to ask questions. The Prowler wonders if free samples are involved?

In the same plaza on the same date, don't miss Music in the Plaza. Starting at 5 p.m., Marshall Art Shapiro and Friends crank out mainstream jazz and fusion. The playbill for July 26 features light opera performed by the San Jose Opera Guild. The SJOG does a great job with a musical genre that isn't always palatable to those who haven't yet acquired the taste.

Speaking of song, the Prowler hears that the West Valley Light Opera Association performs Crazy for You--a Gershwin musical comedy--now through Aug. 1 at the Saratoga Civic Theater. Call 268-3777 for information.
